Sierra is downloaded from the App Store on your Mac using the Purchased tab. It is a no-cost purchase.
As a first step in the upgrade process be sure to make a complete backup of everything.

Get an external drive, connect it to your computer, and then either set up Time Machine or use a product such as the Disk Utility or Carbon Copy Cloner to create a bootable clone.
